After watching the film “Most Likely to Succeed” I was very impressed with the massive changes High Tech High implemented in its overall teaching style and curriculum. Reflecting back on my personal experiences in elementary school I would have described myself as a ‘by the book’ student. All that was ever important to me was achieving straight A’s and to do that I simply memorized as much content as human possible. I was able to accomplish my goal but if you were to ask me the following year to take a test on what I had learned the previous one I am confident I would have failed. High Tech High is revolutionizing the education system by having students focus more on skills necessary for success outside the classroom instead of shoving content down their throats. A perfect example of this is Samantha, a Grade 9 student who at the beginning of her freshman year at High Tech displayed a level of shyness and lacked confidence within herself. Through High Tech’s way of teaching, she was able to develop immense leadership skills by way of directing an ancient Greek and Iranian infused play. It was incredibly interesting to see the transformation of Samantha and I had to keep reminding myself that this was just in the time span of one year. “Most Likely to Succeed” carries the controversial topic of completely changing our education system. The techniques used at High Tech are scary, especially to parents, whose ideology of school is test and grade based. My belief is that we need to find a balance between the systems presented at High Tech and the so-called “old” way of teaching. By achieving a balance of old and new; students can gain valuable social skills like leadership and collaboration seen at High Tech, while also receiving exposure to assessments and positive studying practices. All-in-all the success High Tech High has accomplished is admirable and every teacher at that school deserves the upmost respect.
